UL Listed versus “UL compliant”
These phrases are not interchangeable. A product represented as UL Listed should carry the applicable UL certification mark and be identifiable in UL’s certification records. “Designed to meet UL 924,” “UL 924 compliant,” or similar marketing language does not by itself prove that the complete product has been independently certified.
Before specifying or purchasing equipment:
- Inspect the product label or specification sheet for the certification mark.
- Confirm that the mark applies to the complete fixture or equipment—not merely one internal component.
- Check the model number, environmental rating, input voltage, and intended application.

Does UL 924 require 90 minutes of emergency operation?
The familiar 90-minute duration comes from the broader life-safety and building-code framework for emergency egress illumination. UL 924 provides the product evaluation used to demonstrate that covered equipment can perform its intended emergency function, while adopted codes determine where emergency lighting is required and the performance that the installed system must deliver.
For battery-backed unit equipment, the practical result is that the battery, charger, lamps or LEDs, control circuit, and enclosure must work as a system. The fixture must not merely turn on during a brief test; it must support the specified emergency performance for the applicable duration under its rated conditions.

Normal power, transfer, and battery charging
Emergency equipment is normally connected to an unswitched source so it can detect loss of normal power and keep its battery charged. When normal power fails, unit equipment automatically transfers to its emergency source. When normal power returns, the unit resumes charging and returns to its normal state.
That sequence is why several installation details matter:
- Unswitched supply: Connecting life-safety equipment only to a wall switch can prevent charging or create a false outage condition.
- Correct input lead: Many commercial fixtures accept 120/277V, but the installer must use the correct conductor and cap unused leads as instructed.
- Battery connection: Some equipment ships with the battery disconnected and must be connected during commissioning.
- Initial charge: The manufacturer’s required charging period should be completed before a full-duration test.
- Ambient limits: Battery capacity and electronics can be affected by temperature. Use equipment listed and rated for the actual location.
Hardwired installation and branch-circuit work should be performed by qualified personnel in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and locally adopted electrical requirements.
Self-testing and self-diagnostic equipment
Self-testing emergency lights and exit signs can automate scheduled functional checks and indicate faults through LEDs, displays, audible signals, or stored diagnostic information. UL 924 evaluation of applicable controls helps establish that the feature operates as part of the listed equipment, but self-test capability does not eliminate the owner’s responsibility to inspect equipment, respond to faults, maintain records, and meet local testing rules.

- Which tests are initiated automatically and how often

- Whether results must be read at each fixture or can be monitored centrally

Emergency ballasts and LED emergency drivers
An emergency ballast or LED driver converts a portion of a normal luminaire into emergency equipment. Selection cannot be based on input voltage alone. The emergency device must be compatible with the exact lamp or LED load, luminaire construction, test switch, charging indicator, temperature range, and intended emergency output.
A component bearing its own certification does not automatically make every field-created combination acceptable. Remote heads and connected loads
A remote-capable emergency unit is listed for a defined connected load. Adding heads beyond that capacity can reduce output or operating time. Match the head voltage, wattage, environment, polarity where applicable, and maximum load specified by the power unit. Conductor length and voltage drop also affect performance.

Wet, damp, cold, and hazardous locations
A UL 924 listing does not mean that a product is suitable for every environment. Equipment installed outdoors, in washdown areas, freezers, corrosive facilities, or classified hazardous locations needs the appropriate additional construction and rating.
- Use damp- or wet-location equipment where exposure requires it.
- Confirm the listed ambient temperature range, especially for cold-weather batteries.
- Use corrosion-resistant construction where chemicals, salt, or washdown are present.

OSHA requires workplace exit routes to remain adequately lighted and exit signs to remain visible, with specific sign illumination and lettering provisions in 29 CFR 1910.37.
