Fluorescent Emergency Ballasts for Backup Lighting

An emergency ballast supplies temporary battery power to compatible fluorescent lamps when normal AC power fails. It combines a charger, battery and emergency control circuit so an existing fixture can provide reduced-output emergency illumination during an outage.

Emergency Ballast vs LED Emergency Driver

The terms are sometimes used interchangeably in searches, but the products are not automatically interchangeable. A fluorescent emergency ballast is selected around compatible fluorescent lamp types and fixture wiring. An LED emergency backup driver is designed around the electrical requirements of an LED load or luminaire. Confirm the existing light source before ordering.

How an Emergency Ballast Works

During normal operation, building power runs the fixture and keeps the emergency battery charged. When normal power is interrupted, the emergency ballast automatically switches the designated lamp or lamps to battery operation. Emergency light output is typically lower than normal fixture output and varies by model.

Retrofit or Complete Emergency Fixture?

An emergency ballast can be appropriate when a compatible fluorescent fixture remains serviceable and the project calls for integrated backup operation. A complete emergency light may be more practical when the existing fixture is damaged, obsolete or being converted to LED. Coordinate the lighting system with battery-backup exit signs and exit sign and emergency light combo units where required.

Installation and Testing

Emergency ballasts should be installed by qualified personnel according to the supplied wiring diagram, product listing and applicable requirements. After installation and charging, test transfer to emergency operation and verify the designated lamp illuminates.
